Current Projects

Kurmanji (working title) 2023

Currently Fitzgerald is making a film using footage from the performance based outcomes investigated in Movement, Change and Identity (2019). Using this, alongside found footage, she begins to interrogate and reflect upon the cultural territory of her collaboration and exchange with Shireen Hama, a Kurdish student and refugee from the war in Syria.

She continues her support of the refugee community in Cumbria and is an active member of Carlisle Refugee Action Group (C.R.A.G.).

Everypony Collective (2019)

Fitzgerald continues to develop poetry, performance and film responses initiated during the Frie-Raum Project. As a founder member of the Everypony

Collective, she has recently produced collaborative performances with the group which consists of Syrian refugees, artists and poets, all of whom are based in Carlisle. Together they engaged in exploring the theme of migration. The group participated in a residency during October 2019, at The Pharmacy art space, with a following exhibition and performance in November, titled Movement, Change and Identity.

Frie-Raum: Spheres of Freedom (2018 - Present)

In the summer of 2018, Fitzgerald received her first international commission from the Goethe Institute. Frie-Raum: Spheres of Freedom was a Europe-wide project in which over 20 cities responded creatively to questions exploring European identity. In Carlisle, creative groups were asked to address two questions 'What is isolation?' and 'How do we overcome it?'

Through a series of workshops with Syrian refugees, recently settled in the city, Fitzgerald created a body of responses with the group which has also extended to a film project and poetry performances. This body of work, Frieraum: Syrian Refugees, was exhibited in Carlisle in February 2019, along with other creative groups.

Outcomes for all of the participating cities were shown in Berlin at ZK/U in March 2019.
